Google offers you the opportunity to create your own search engine. This is extremely handy when working with young students or in regards to questionable content areas. Teachers may simply want to create their own search engine for their class to help monitor the content on the web. This post will outline the steps needed to create your own Custom Search Engine.

  • Type "google.com/cse" into your Omnibar
  • Click on New Search Engine (if this is your first visit, you will be put onto this page already)

  • In the Sites to Search Bar, you will enter the safe links you would like to your search engine to use.
    • EX: www.kidrex.orgwww.natgeo.com
    • You can add any of the following:
      • Individual pages: www.example.com/page.html
      • Entire site: www.mysite.com/*
      • Parts of site: www.example.com/docs/* or www.example.com/docs/
      • Entire domain: *.example.com

  • Then Name your Search Engine

  • When you are done, you can click on Edit Search Engine

  • Here you can change if images come up in the search

  • You can change the look and feel: including layout, themes, customizing, and thumbnails

  • When you are done, you can get the Public URL under details

  • Just Paste this on your website, or make it your homepage on chrome for your students
  • Go back and update your search engine at any time to keep it up with the most recent information!
