The world we live in is an extremely judgmental one. People are constantly criticized by their choices, even if they are the right ones. Education is not separated from this stamina, in fact, it may be one of the most emphasized fields. Standardized testing, higher demands for learning, and global competition has created a trend of critics surrounding education. I am not saying that these are bad things, they have just built a lens that I am not a fan of. Some educators today take on a negative lens. They approach new initiatives, new standards, and new technology with a demeanor of frustration. All of these are met with excuses why they should not be done. "It is a waste of time", "we will change this initiative in a couple of years", or "we need to do better on the tests before we do something like this." In my world, I can even perceive something like this. I am a die hard optimist and I meet all newness as a challenge. I know that I am set apart from the norm, but I want to open you up to how I see these actions. When I work with teachers who have this lens, it is very difficult, not only on a professional level but on a personal level. When I hear excuses for why teachers are not willing to change, I take that as them saying: "I don't want to teach these kids to my fullest ability and effort" Working with these teachers can only go so far. I can show them so many cool tools, inspirational videos, or explain the reasons for change before I reach the end of my resources. The only thing left to do is to be forceful, which I never like to do. It puts a negative spin on the initiative therefore furthering the negative attitude of that teacher. So now that you see what I see, I want to let you in on a secret. No matter who I work with, and how they perceive the world, this is how I feel about everyone! "You are amazing and can do anything, I am here to help!" I believe that anyone can do anything and we can all take on a positive lens. Here is what I recommend you start with:
After you take on a positive lens, you will see that all things are possible. You will challenge yourself, your students, and your colleagues teach like you never have before! You will truly transform education, forever! |
